Job summary

Fairfax County Public Schools is seeking a skilled carpenter to construct, maintain, and repair buildings and structures within the Office of Facilities Management. The role requires reading blueprints, using carpentry tools, and performing routine maintenance across site and shop environments.

The position calls for high school graduation or GED with carpentry experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work evenings or overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Evening/night shifts, call-back overtime, and emergency call-out may be required.
  • Knowledge of carpentry equipment, materials, and tools.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manuals.
  • Ability to estimate time and material needs and perform routine calculations.
  • Completion of an apprentice-level training program is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Construct new building structures or additions.
  • Disassemble temporary buildings for relocation and reassembly.
  • Perform carpentry repairs on roofs, walls, floors, stairs, doors, and windows.
  • Secure buildings during emergencies when doors/windows are compromised.
  • Fit and install interior and exterior trim.
  • Hang boards, signs, and bulletin boards.
  • Install or repair counters, shelves, and sinks.
  • Repair bleachers and construct forms for concrete work.
  • Install ceiling tiles, blinds and curtains, lockers, Formica, and linoleum.
  • Work on-site or in a shop and drive to locations with tools and materials.
  • Maintain vehicle and keep records of work and materials used.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Required

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • One (1) year of experience in carpentry at the apprentice II or equivalent level.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
  • Knowledge of methods and skills in the use of carpentry equipment, materials, and tools.
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when the repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.

  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program.
Major Duties/Essential Functions
  • Constructs new building structures or additions.
  • Disassembles temporary buildings for relocation and reassembly at a new site.
  • Makes carpentry repairs on roofs, walls, floors, steps, thresholds, and handrails.
  • Repairs or replaces doors, windows, and associated hardware.
  • In an emergency, secures buildings when doors cannot be closed or windows are broken.
  • Fits and installs interior and exterior trim.
  • Hangs blackboards, bulletin boards, signs, and fire extinguisher boards.
  • Installs or repairs counters, shelves, and sink tops.
  • Repairs bleachers.
  • Constructs forms for concrete work.
  • May perform such duties as installing ceiling tiles, blinds and black-out curtains, lockers, Formica, and linoleum.
  • Performs work on-site or in a shop.
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials.
  • Performs operator maintenance on the vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements

This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
