Job Summary

Bucknell University is currently accepting applications for a Carpenter I or II position in the Facilities Department. As a member of the essential services team, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for performing both rough and finish carpentry to maintain, repair, and renovate university buildings and facilities. This position requires broad expertise in carpentry techniques, proficiency with relevant tools, and adherence to safety protocols.

Job Duties

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Carpenter Supervisor

Work Setting/Schedule: On-campus Monday – Friday, 6:00am – 2:30pm; Some evening and weekend work may be required, including overtime, in support of University’s operations and special events. Essential services staff are required to report to work during times of campus closure or emergencies.

What You Will Do
  • Building Maintenance and Repairs: Performs rough and finish carpentry work to repair and maintain university buildings. This includes repairing walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs, signage, and structural components. Responds to work orders for general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Cabinetry & Millwork: Constructs, installs, and repairs custom cabinetry, shelving, countertops, and millwork. Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools to cut, shape, and assemble wood and other materials.
  • Renovation & New Construction: Participates in minor renovation projects including framing, installing drywall, insulation, doors, windows, and trim. Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics to ensure compliance with project specifications. Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed for specific jobs. Maintain accurate records of work orders, time sheets, and materials used.
  • Planning, Estimation, and Documentation: Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, and technical drawings to determine project requirements. Estimates time, materials, and equipment needed for specific carpentry jobs. Maintains accurate records of work orders, time sheets, and materials used.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adheres to all university safety protocols and building codes. Maintains a clean and organized work area and ensures all tools and equipment are in good working order.
  • Project/Event Support & Coordination: Collaborates with other trades and facilities staff (e.g., plumbers, electricians, painters, grounds, etc.) to coordinate project timelines. Communicates effectively with supervisor and university staff to provide project updates and resolve issues. Provides support to university events and other support functions.

Carpenter II Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform duties of lead carpenter on assigned projects as the person on-site responsible for customer satisfaction, protection, cleanliness, safety, carpentry labor, and communication.
  • Develop bill of materials and project schedules.
  • Make recommendations regarding construction means & methods, details, and materials.
What You Will Bring - Required
Carpenter I
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience as a carpenter OR equivalent two-year technical training/certifications in carpentry
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive university vehicles
Carpenter II
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six years of experience as a carpenter leading projects/installations, OR two-year vocational/technical degree or equivalent training as a carpenter and four years of hands‑on experience as a carpenter leading projects & installations
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive university vehicles
Preferred, But Not Required
  • Lift Training/Certification 10-Hour OSHA Certification Carpentry experience in the building construction industry. Must have ability to learn and use Microsoft Office and other computer programs such as email and calendars, computerized work order tracking (CMMS), timekeeping (Workday), events management, scheduling, estimating software and other programs utilized by the University.
Additional Details
  • Candidates must be able to pass a post-offer criminal background and motor vehicle check
  • Employees must furnish and maintain their own small hand tools (e.g. hammer, tape measure, knife, screwdrivers, levels, etc.)
  • Must have ability to learn and use Microsoft Office and other computer programs such as email and calendars, computerized work order tracking, events management, scheduling, estimating software and other programs utilized by the University.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift and carry 75 pounds unassisted. Must have sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Ability to move around work sites including climb ladders, stairs and scaffolds; enter and exit trenches, crawl spaces and confined areas; work on scaffolds, elevated walkways, roofs and elevated areas.
  • Must be able to perform work in a safe manner in accordance with OSHA standards, department and University’s policies.
  • The scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to flooring and carpentry work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
  • The person in this position works indoors and outdoors. There is daily exposure to dust, dirt, weather, and temperature changes.
Pay Rate

Carpenter I: $19.74 - $24.67

Carpenter II: $22.70 - $28.38

Job Exempt

No Salary Range: 22.70-28.38 The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
