The Position

The Position

Incumbent works under the direction of the Director of Public Properties or designee, performing various construction, repairs, select demolition and alterations, and maintenance duties on structures (e.g. furniture, equipment, partitions) within the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Properties.

Essential Functions

  • Repair and alter buildings and various wooden structures within stipulations of building codes, reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and sketches, planning work accordingly.
  • Install, erect, and/or repair doors and hardware, walls, casework, windows/screens, flooring, countertops, partitions, drywall, steel stud framing, and building framework.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
  • Assist in estimating, selecting, and procuring materials and supplies through Facility Superintendent.
  • Prepare and install frames, casing, transoms, shelving, plywood, bulletin boards, bookcases, etc.
  • Collaborate with other trades ensuring efficient project completion.
  • Install or repair floor boards trim and other coverings (e.g. ceramic/quarry tile, VCT, carpet tiles).
  • Install steel studs, fire rated steel jambs, commercial door hardware, and repair existing door hardware.
  • Perform preventative maintenance periodically checking various buildings, structures, interiors, rooftops, and equipment, and reporting structural and equipment damage and hazards.
  • Recommend and suggest changes for operational efficiency of the department (e.g. new products, techniques).
  • Clean, store, and maintain tools and supplies, keeping work area safe.
  • Apply chemicals and observe safety procedures.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.
  • Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed.


Education And Work Experience And Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.*
  • Trade or vocational school course work in blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, mathematics, carpentry, and finish woodworking preferred.
  • One (1) year of carpentry experience required.*
  • Applicants must possess the following tools upon employment: rough saw (8 point/teeth per inch), finish saw (10 point/teeth per inch), claw hammer, combination square, framing square, level, wood chisels, rule, screw driver set (straight and phillips), pliers set, nail sets, block planes, tin snips, coping saw, hack saw, compass saw, bevel square, pry bar, scribes, utility knife, wood rasp, chalk box, crescent and allen wrenches.
  • Valid driver's license and own transportation upon hire and throughout the course of employment.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, physical assessment and conditional offer drug screen required.
  • *Equivalent combination of work experience and education may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Work is generally performed indoors and outdoors. Noise level is usually moderate to loud. Work hours are typically standard day-shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. nights, weekends, holidays, overtime/extra time, emergency call-in). Work involves potential exposure to adverse weather conditions, mechanical/electrical hazards, noxious odors, and allergens. Work may be stressful when dealing with time constraints, multiple/changing priorities, limited resources and uncooperative/irate individuals.
  • Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of standing, walking, frequent kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and occasional stooping, climbing. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Incumbent must have the ability to maneuver over rough terrain on foot and climb in and out of vehicles.
  • Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the eye-hand-foot coordination and manual dexterity to operate computers and other equipment (e.g. vehicles, power tools).
