Job summary

Newberry College is seeking a half-time, grant-funded Student Coaching and Career Preparation role within The Muller Center for Careers & Purpose in Newberry, SC. You will provide individualized career coaching to assigned student populations, guide exploration and planning, and support resume and interview preparation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in higher education, counseling, student development, business, human resources, communication, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting students or clients through advising, coaching, education, workforce development, human resources, or a related service-oriented role.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to classes and groups and build effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple priorities while providing responsive, student-centered service and meeting established deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and to maintain confidentiality, sound professional judgment, and appropriate boundaries.
  • Comfort using technology and learning new platforms for communication, appointment management, student engagement, program delivery, and data tracking.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized career coaching and proactive outreach to assigned student populations, supporting students at different stages of career exploration, preparation, and transition.
  • Guide students through career exploration and planning, including the use and interpretation of career assessments, identification of interests, strengths, values, transferable skills, career options, and practical next steps.
  • Assist students with career preparation materials and professional skills, including resumes, cover letters, professional profiles, networking, interviewing, workplace communication, and professional etiquette.
  • Support internship, employment, and graduate education searches, helping students identify opportunities, use career technology and search resources, prepare competitive applications, and follow through on action plans.
  • Support student access to industry certifications and other workforce credentials, including awareness-building, preparation referrals, and coordination with relevant academic and campus partners.
  • Develop and facilitate career readiness workshops, classroom presentations, and small-group programs that respond to student and faculty needs and advance workforce preparation goals.
  • Plan and implement targeted outreach strategies to increase awareness, participation, and follow-through among assigned student populations. Outreach may include email, text communication, print materials, social media content, classroom outreach, and direct student contact.
  • Build collaborative relationships with faculty and academic programs, serving as a career development resource and identifying opportunities to integrate career readiness into courses, assignments, and co-curricular experiences.
  • Represent The Muller Center for Careers & Purpose at campus programs and events, including orientation, recruitment activities, career fairs, student engagement initiatives, and other programs supporting student success and career readiness.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager for Career Readiness and other Muller Center staff to connect students with employer engagement, work-based learning, mentoring, networking, career fairs, and career placement activities.
  • Coordinate with faculty, staff, employers, and campus partners to connect students with appropriate resources, programs, and opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student engagement and services, track participation and outcomes, and contribute data and narrative updates for grant reporting, program assessment, and continuous improvement.
  • Use career development technology and assessment tools effectively, helping students engage with available platforms and using participation data to inform outreach and programming.
  • Maintain current knowledge of career development practices, labor-market trends, recruiting practices, and emerging career technology, and translate relevant developments into practical guidance, resources, and programming.
  • Participate in relevant professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of The Muller Center for Careers & Purpose, student success, and institutional workforce-readiness goals.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
Student Coaching and Career Preparation

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is a half-time grant-funded position. The work schedule will be established in coordination with the Director of the Muller Center for Careers & Purpose and may vary based on student needs and the College's academic calendar. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for student programming, career fairs, campus events, and outreach activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, career development, business, communication, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in college career services, academic advising, student success, or workforce development, particularly in a role involving direct student coaching or outreach.
  • Experience developing and facilitating workshops, classroom presentations, or career readiness programs.
  • Familiarity with career assessments, career services technology, and internship or job-search resources.
  • Experience in communication, public relations, marketing, or student engagement that supports effective outreach and program visibility.
