Career Concierge

The Career Concierge supports Norfolk State University Career Services by helping students connect with career resources, events, and services. This student position is a great opportunity to build communication, customer service, organization, and professional skills while working in a campus office.

Responsibilities
  • Welcome students, employers, and campus visitors to Career Services.
  • Answer basic questions and direct students to the appropriate career resources.
  • Assist with career fairs, employer events, workshops, and campus recruiting activities.
  • Help students navigate Handshake and other Career Services resources.
  • Support office projects, data entry, filing, and general administrative tasks.
  • Promote Career Services events through flyers, social media, and campus outreach.
  • Help keep the Career Services reception area organized and welcoming.

Wage and Hours

Wage employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked and are limited to working 1500 hours per year and can only work a maximum of 29 hours a week. Work hours must be counted on the basis of the twelve-month period beginning May 1 of each year and April 30 of the following year. Wage employees in all agencies (all branches of government) are limited to working no more than 1500 hours during each twelve-month period of May 1-April 30. Should you work 1500 hours prior to April 30, your services will be terminated immediately. You will not be eligible for employment again until May 1. It is the responsibility of the employee and supervisor, as well as the Office of Human Resources, to monitor these hours to ensure compliance to policy. Wage employees may not earn leave nor do they have access to the Grievance Procedure process. They are not covered by the provision of the Virginia Personnel Act and are not entitled to the benefits afforded employees occupying classified positions.

Background Checks and Eligibility

Norfolk State University conducts background checks on all candidates identified as a finalist for employment consideration. The type of background check(s) performed are dependent upon the type of position for which you have been identified as a finalist and may include criminal history, including sexual offender registry checks, reference checks, degree validation, DMV (driving) records, license verification, and credit report reviews. The results of background checks are made available to University employing officials. As a finalist, you will be required to sign an Authorization to Release form. Norfolk State University utilizes Form I-9 and E-verify in the verification of eligibility for employment. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
