Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Boston is seeking an ESOL Instructor and advisor for the Education & Training Center in Boston. This part-time role involves delivering high-quality instruction to adult learners and advising them to meet personal and professional goals.

You will conduct lessons 32 weeks from Sep 2026–May 2027, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 6:30–8:00 PM, totaling about 15 hours per week including prep and meetings. Proficiency in MS Office and Google Classroom is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required or educational background preferred.
• TESOL/TEFL/TESL certification required.
• Proficiency in MS Office and Google Classroom.
• Authorization to work in the U.S.
• Strong sensitivity to socio-economic and ethnic minority issues.

Responsibilities

• Deliver ESOL instruction to adult learners from diverse backgrounds.
• Create engaging, contextually relevant lesson plans integrating language and life skills.

Description

About Us: The YMCA Education & Training Center has been helping immigrants learn English and develop employment skills to improve their lives since 1975. We are seeking a passionate and experienced ESOL instructor to join our team and help make a tangible difference in the lives of our students.

Position Overview: As an ESOL Instructor and advisor, you will deliver high-quality instruction to adult learners from diverse backgrounds, helping them develop essential language skills. This role involves creating an engaging, student-centered environment where learning goals align with students' personal and professional objectives.

Schedule:

• September 2026 – May 2027, 32 weeks
• Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 PM
• 15 hours/week between live instruction, prep, advising, and bi-weekly meetings

Key Responsibilities

• Teach ESOL to adults from varied linguistic, cultural, religious, socio-economic, and educational background.
• Design and deliver engaging, contextually relevant lesson plans that integrate both language and life skills.
• Foster an inclusive and safe classroom atmosphere that supports active participation and language practice.
• Present clear language and content objectives for each session.
• Regularly conduct formative and summative assessments to monitor and report on students’ progress.
• Provides ongoing support to help students stay on track academically and personally.
• Tracks student progress and outcomes related to education and employment.
• Communicate any classroom or student concerns to the Program Manager promptly.
• Maintain accurate attendance records and submit them on time.
• Upload course materials (e.g., handouts, slides) to Google Classroom for student access.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree required; educational background preferred.
• TESOL, TEFL, or TESL certification required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Classroom.
• Authorization to work in the U.S.
• Strong understanding of and sensitivity to socio-economic and ethnic minority issues.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Comfortable using web-based file storage platforms (e.g., Google Docs, SharePoint.
• Bilingual is a plus.
