Job summary

Catholic Health Services is seeking a Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant to provide comprehensive patient management and intraoperative support. The PA will perform exams, order labs, prescribe interventions, and deliver direct care in collaboration with CH affiliated provider groups.

The ideal candidate holds NY PA licensure, NCCPA certification, BLS/ACLS/AED, and a DEA license. Prior CT surgery experience is preferred; new grads with relevant clinical exposure may be considered.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an PA program accredited by the ARC-PA; Master’s preferred.
• New grads with relevant electives or clinical background considered.

Responsibilities

• Function as first or second assistant during Cardiothoracic procedures (when competencies are met).
• Harvest and prepare saphenous veins for CABG (when competencies are met).
• On-call at assigned times to assist attending surgeons outside regular hours.
• Assist in pre-surgical preparation and planning.
• Perform H&Ps, order tests, review PAT results, notify attending of abnormal findings.
• Write admission orders for Cardiothoracic Surgery patients.
• Assist in pre- and post-operative care under surgeon supervision.
• Write orders for labs, medications, narcotics, stimulants and depressants.
• Provide routine pre- and post-operative orders for patient care.
• Perform routine procedures in pre/post care as assigned; insert catheters and lines.
• Remove lines and chest tubes as needed.
• Perform emergency life-saving procedures in absence of a physician.
• Provide training for students and other non-physician staff.
• Discuss conduit with Surgeon prior to the case.
• Write progress notes documenting status and treatments.
• Notify supervising surgeon of unusual events requiring consultation.
• Document restraints per policy and state law; remain on-site during shifts.
• Perform other duties as required by the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
