Job summary

Penn Medicine is actively seeking a Physician Assistant to support a Cardiothoracic Surgery service. You will assist the surgeon before, during, and after procedures, advocate for patients, and coordinate data collection to optimize diagnostic and therapeutic plans.

Requirements include an accredited PA program graduate, science degree, and ACLS/BCLS certification. Two years in cardiothoracic surgery is preferred; training time is about six months.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in a physical science from an accredited institution required.
• Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program.
• Must complete courses of training for both basic and advanced cardiac life support.
• Two years recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery preferred.
• Recent Board eligible graduate acceptable.
• Must be certified or eligible by the NCCPA and Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and Licensure.
• Knowledge of pre-existing conditions that may affect surgical procedure.
• Working knowledge of cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures and anatomy.
• Basic understanding of major surgical complications and their treatment.
• Ability to harvest all native conduits used for coronary bypass grafting.
• Knowledge of cardiac patient postoperative management.
• Training time required once hired: 6 months

Responsibilities

• Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and work-up of patients.
• Assists the surgeon in each surgical procedure.
• Participates in postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications.
• Performs therapeutic procedures and assignments as directed by the surgeon and as indicated by his/her training and experience.
