Job summary

Mercy Health is seeking a Surgical Assistant for the Cardiac Team at Anderson Hospital. The role supports cardiac procedures, prepares the OR, and assists surgeons intra-operatively, including exposure, suturing, and hemostasis.

Requirements include a Surgical Assistant Program completion, two years OR experience, and CSA certification. BLS is preferred; Virginia licensure or Cincinnati eligibility may apply.

Qualifications

• Two years’ experience in an Operating Room.
• Experience in cardiovascular operating room (preferred; required for RSFH).
• BLS Basic Life Support – preferred upon hire; must obtain prior to direct patient care.
• Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - NBSTSA/NSAA/NCCSA (required).
• If employed in Virginia, registered with Virginia Board of Medicine as Surgical Assistant (required).

Responsibilities

• Serves as the surgical assistant on assigned cardiac surgery cases; functions in the scrub role as assigned.
• Under surgeon supervision, handles tissue, provides exposure, uses instruments, sutures, and provides hemostasis; performs wound closure and knot tying.
• Performs surgical hand scrub and gowning/gloving per policy.
• Assists in draping to establish sterile field per standards and policies.
• Assists with dressings; maintains patient safety and a hazard-free environment.
