Job summary

HSDC Ohio is seeking a Canine Department Manager to provide hands-on leadership and oversight for the canine program, including animal care, intake, pathway planning, foster, behavior, and adoption.

You will supervise staff and drive population management while ensuring program quality and consistent policy implementation across the department, collaborating with veterinary, behavior, and operations teams to support timely placements and humane care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; four-year degree preferred but not required.
• Demonstrated management/supervisory experience in animal welfare preferred.
• Strong leadership, coaching, communication, and emotional intelligence.

Responsibilities

• Supervises Dog Caretakers, Dog Team Lead, and Foster Coordinator; sets clear expectations and ensures staffing coverage.
• Leads team meetings and 1:1s; provides coaching, feedback, training, and performance management.
• Participates in hiring, onboarding, and development; identifies training needs and builds a collaborative team culture.
• Manages canine intake, adoption, and foster pathways to ensure timely placements.
• Maintains SOPs, trains volunteers, tracks KPIs, and reports departmental updates.
