Job summary

University of Michigan seeks an Operations Manager for Waste Management Services to lead refuse, recycling, compost, and related street-sweeping across campus. You will oversee about 10 skilled trades workers and seasonal labor, ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible service.

The role interfaces with Procurement, Fleet, and project teams, reviews building plans for waste needs, and coordinates services for major campus events while maintaining operations continuity.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of related professional experience.
• Experience coordinating or supervising a complex, service-oriented operation involving employees, routes, vehicles, equipment, and customer requirements.
• Strong customer-relations skills, including the ability to listen to customer needs, communicate service expectations, resolve concerns, and develop practical solutions.
• Ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and manage difficult or sensitive customer interactions professionally.
• Knowledge of workplace safety principles and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain safe operating practices.

Responsibilities

• Direct the daily collection of refuse, compost, recycling, and other designated waste streams across campus.
• Direct street-sweeping services for campus-owned roads and athletic facilities.
• Plan and assign collection routes, street-sweeping routes, and other work activities to meet service levels.
• Adjust staffing, vehicles, routes, and schedules in response to operational conditions and events.
• Monitor service completion and resolve missed collections, contamination, equipment failures, and access concerns.
• Coordinate waste-management and street-sweeping support for construction, athletic events, and non-routine campus operations.
• Hire, onboard, train, coach, evaluate, and discipline staff in accordance with policies and bargaining agreements.
• Develop staffing plans and daily assignments for employees with varied schedules.
