Job summary

American University is seeking a Lead Operating Engineer to manage and mentor a team of Operating Engineers within the Energy Management unit. The role oversees inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of campus utility systems, including steam, chilled water, and water treatment, ensuring reliability and energy efficiency.

Under the Assistant Chief Engineer, you will schedule assignments, train staff, maintain records, and respond to after-hours requests.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; 3-5 years relevant experience in plant operations.
• At least two years’ experience with high-pressure steam boilers not exceeding 400 HP or equivalent.
• DC 3rd Class Steam Engineer’s license (non-restricted) by date of hire; valid US driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Lead team; schedule work assignments and set priorities.
• Train and direct Operating Engineers and Assistant Operating Engineers.
• Perform operation, preventative maintenance, and repair of campus steam, chilled water, and other utility systems.
