Job summary

Al's Towing and Storage in Sterling, VA is seeking a Fleet Dispatcher to keep trucks loaded, on schedule, and compliant. You will assign loads, route drivers, and resolve issues in real time, serving as the main link between drivers, customers, brokers, and the operations team.

This role emphasizes load planning, driver communication, and proactive customer service while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance. On-site shifts and collaboration with the Operations team are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1+ year of dispatch, logistics, or transportation operations experience.
• Working knowledge of FMCSA hours-of-service rules and ELD requirements.
• Strong geography and map-reading skills across the service region.
• Preferred: 2+ years dispatching for an asset-based carrier.
• Preferred: Associate's or bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain, or business.
• Preferred: Experience with equipment types such as dry van, reefer, or flatbed.
• Preferred: CDL holder or driver experience.
• Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Load planning and assignment based on location, equipment, hours of service, and delivery windows.
• Build efficient routes to reduce empty miles, fuel costs, and tolls.
• Book and confirm pickup and delivery appointments with shippers and receivers.
• Act as drivers' main point of contact during shifts.
• Track trucks via ELD/GPS and confirm check-calls, arrivals, and departures.
• Reroute drivers around delays, weather, road closures, and breakdowns.
• Coordinate roadside assistance, repairs, and recovery with Maintenance.
• Provide accurate ETAs and proactive delay notices to customers and brokers.
• Resolve service failures, detention, and accessorial issues promptly.
• Plan loads within FMCSA hours-of-service; ensure compliance.
• Flag gaps in compliance, safety, or documentation.
• Report accidents and incidents per company procedure.
• Keep load status and documents up to date in the TMS.
• Collect BOLs and PODs to support same-day billing.
• Hand off open issues clearly at shift change.

Position summary

• Reports to: Dispatch Manager / Operations Manager
• Employment type: Full-time, non-exempt
• Schedule: Thursday, Friday, Saturday shift 7:00a - 7:00p or 7:00p - 7:00a (hiring for both day and night shifts)
• Location: Al's Towing and Storage Sterling, VA

Key responsibilities

Load planning and assignment

• Assign loads to drivers based on location, equipment, hours of service, and delivery windows
• Build efficient routes that cut empty miles, fuel cost, and tolls
• Book and confirm pickup and delivery appointments with shippers and receivers

Driver communication and support

• Act as each driver's first point of contact throughout the shift
• Track trucks via ELD/GPS and confirm check-calls, arrivals, and departures

• Flag drivers, equipment, or loads with compliance, safety, or documentation gaps
• Report accidents and incidents to Safety per company procedure

Records and reporting

• Keep load status, notes, and documents current in the TMS
• Collect BOLs and PODs to support same-day billing
• Hand off open issues clearly at shift change
