Business Developer

The Machinists Institute, a 501c3 nonprofit was created by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers District 751 to fill a vital role for training and apprenticeship programs for the community. MI provides world class training to current and future aerospace, automotive and manufacturing workers. The Institute focuses on providing living-wage career opportunities through education and training across the state.

The Business Development Manager is committed to developing and managing strategic partnerships between MI and employers representing aerospace, manufacturing, maritime, robotics, milling and automotive industries. They work with employers and stakeholders to identify training needs and promote MI training programs including Registered Apprenticeship programs, incumbent worker trainings and other relevant opportunities related to MI program offerings.

Reports to: Sr. Director of Partnerships

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop and advance strategic partnerships between statewide employers representing multiple industries and the MI. Work with industry leaders to help identify their priority workforce training and hiring needs.
  • Provide professional guidance and consultation regarding the development, management, and operation of their apprenticeship programs. Services include identifying the skill set needed by employees to obtain the highest level of productivity while maintaining quality standards. Serve as the liaison among participating companies, partner organizations.
  • Communicate industry feedback to MI to support responsiveness to industry.
  • Proactively engage with industry leaders to promote MI programs, including recruitment and sponsorship of apprentices, curriculum development, equipment selection, worksite tours, and potential donations.
  • Serve as a liaison to statewide employers to promote work-based learning programs such as registered apprenticeships, youth apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships and other similar models.
  • Work collaboratively with statewide educational, economic and workforce development agencies supporting the manufacturing, aerospace and automotive sectors such as school districts, universities, chambers of commerce, workforce boards, and economic development agencies to align industry engagement, articulate seamless pathways for these careers, and promote MI programs.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to share best practices and leverage resources to help Washington’s manufacturing, automotive and aerospace sectors remain competitive in national and global markets.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred) in education, business administration or a subject related to the area of job focus. Apprenticeship experience may substitute for educational requirements. Relevant business experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to travel, coordinate events and make large and small group presentations.
  • Excellent presentation skills - both online and face to face - are essential
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Sales CRMS and use of audio visual equipment
  • Demonstrated record of success in relationship-based consultative sales
  • Self-starter with creative outreach ideas - explores new ways forward
  • Ability to adapt to different work environments and propensity to look for opportunities and innovative solutions when presented with a challenge.
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategic industry, academic, and community partnerships and effectively communicating across sectors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion.

Salary and Benefits

  • The starting salary for the position is $85,000 - $90,000 base + bonuses. The Machinists Institute also provides generous health and welfare benefits, 401k match, retirement contributions into a savings plan, and generous leave.
