Job summary

The City of El Paso Texas is seeking a Building Plans Examiner to review residential, commercial and industrial plans for compliance with building, zoning, fire and accessibility codes. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and 4 years of journey-level experience, plus ICC certification within specified timelines.

The position entails providing technical support to the public, issuing permits, answering inquiries, and maintaining plan routing databases.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED plus 4 years journey-level building trades, or architectural/engineering design experience.
Experience in construction code inspection or plan review.
Must obtain ICC Building Plans Examiner within 1 year of appointment; ICC Inspector certs within 6 months.

Responsibilities

Review residential, industrial and commercial plans for compliance with building, zoning, fire and accessibility codes, ordinances and standards.
Provide technical support at the counter, issue permits, explain reviewer comments and assist public with submittal requirements.
Maintain databases tracking plan routing and coordinate with contractors, appraisers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
Conduct field verifications and respond to inquiries regarding code verifications and permit statuses.
