Job summary

City of St Joseph is seeking a Building Official to enforce building codes and inspect plans and sites to protect public safety and property. The role involves managing inspections, training staff, and communicating code requirements to stakeholders.

The official will supervise inspectors and support staff, and work under the Development Director. A Michigan registrations and ongoing education are required or desired as part of professional development.

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of building codes and construction practices.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades.
• Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
• Plan Review Registration is desired; Building Official Registration required.

Responsibilities

• Review plans, specifications and blueprints for code compliance; approve permits.
• Conduct on-site inspections to ensure conformity to state and local codes.
• Enforce multiple codes; issue correction notices and citations.
• Explain codes to architects, engineers, contractors, residents.
• Respond to customer service requests and maintain permits records.
• Train city employees in inspection and code enforcement.
• Perform related duties as required.
