City of St Joseph is seeking a Building Official to enforce building codes and inspect plans and sites to protect public safety and property. The role involves managing inspections, training staff, and communicating code requirements to stakeholders.
The official will supervise inspectors and support staff, and work under the Development Director. A Michigan registrations and ongoing education are required or desired as part of professional development.
The Building Official performs a variety of routine and technical work in enforcing building and related codes. Examines construction plans and performs on-site inspections to determine conformity to codes and ordinances to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public as well as protection of property. Performs a variety of related work as required.
Works under the general supervision of the Development Director
Oversees the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Rental Third-Party Inspectors as well as support staff.

Work is performed both in an office setting and out-of-doors. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment within the office. Physical dexterity is required for many field tasks.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee occasionally works in adverse outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is rarely exposed to the risk of electrical shock should safety precautions not be implemented.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate in the office and quiet to loud in the field.
