Job summary

City of Decatur is seeking a Building Inspector to conduct inspections and enforce building codes for both commercial and residential properties.

The role requires knowledge of codes, the ability to interpret blueprints, and the skill to communicate with builders, homeowners, and city staff. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software is essential, with certifications as a plus.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required with basic to advanced construction knowledge.
• Apprenticeship/internship experience or similar role preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Adobe or similar software.
• ICCs certifications or state regulatory certifications may be required for certain inspection types.

Responsibilities

• Inspect commercial and residential structures to ensure code compliance.
• Discuss violations with builders and homeowners and propose corrective actions.
• Issue stop-orders as needed until compliance is achieved.
• Conduct follow-up inspections to verify correction of violations.
• Maintain inspection records and input data into computer systems.
