Job summary

The Construction Association of Michigan is seeking a Building Inspector to support the City’s code enforcement and development programs. The role focuses on inspecting new and existing structures, rental properties, and related facilities to ensure compliance with state and local codes and permits.

Under the direction of the Community and Economic Development Director, you will investigate complaints, monitor corrective actions, and assist with occupancy reviews.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
• Registration with the State of Michigan as a Building Inspector.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a building inspector or in a closely related field.
• Preferred: State of Michigan Building Official Certification.

Responsibilities

• Interpret and apply building codes, zoning regulations, and rental housing standards while conducting inspections and compliance activities.
• Assist with permit requirements, inspection procedures, and code compliance matters.
• Investigate complaints and identify deficiencies requiring corrective action.
• Coordinate with other inspectors and City staff to schedule inspections and enforce ordinances.
• Prepare inspection documentation, notices, and certificates of occupancy as required.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, complaints, investigations, and enforcement activities.
• Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to property owners and developers.

Education

Michigan driver's license

Registration with the State of Michigan as a Building Inspector

Two years of experience as a building inspector or related field

State of Michigan Building Official Certification (preferred)
