Job summary

City of Detroit is seeking a Supervising Mechanical Inspector to lead a team of inspectors in enforcing codes and city ordinances. This role oversees plan reviews, field inspections, and staff training to ensure compliance with mechanical standards.

The incumbent will mentor inspectors, handle complex investigations, and serve as a liaison with contractors and property owners while promoting safety and code compliance.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Two years of advanced training in mechanical engineering principles and construction methods.
• Three years of inspectional experience in the trades or construction area within a municipality.

Responsibilities

• Supervise inspectors and enforce codes and city ordinances.
• Plan, assign, and schedule inspector work.
• Oversee inspection of construction plans and specifications.
• Review plans and inspection reports.
• Advise on applicable legislation and departmental policies.
• Train new employees and review performance.
• Review and approve notices of violations.
• Conduct investigations and prepare reports with findings and recommendations.
• Engage with contractors, owners, engineers, and architects on code requirements.
• Assist in revising codes, ordinances, and reports.
• Hold office hearings and conduct field checks of inspectors.
