Building Engineer Job Description

Pay Rate and Hours:

  • $23/hr-$28/hr depending on experience
  • 5 pm to 9 pm, Friday & 9 am to 5 pm, every other Sunday

Job Summary: Under general supervision, responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems, including heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and power-generating equipment. Oversee electrical, fire suppression, and plumbing systems. Ensure the safe, correct, and efficient functioning of all equipment and systems within the museum during the shift, while upholding policies related to the care and maintenance of both historic and non-historic assets.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor mechanical and electrical systems via Building Management System (BMS) or manually, ensuring proper operation of boilers, chillers, auxiliary systems, air handlers, cooling towers, generators, DX units, pumps, controls, and valves in main and auxiliary buildings.
  • Support, monitor, and troubleshoot temporary electrical installations during events and programs.
  • Check operating equipment daily, log parameters, note safety issues, and perform minor adjustments and repairs. Report actions to the Lead Building Engineer.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment as directed.
  • Manage shutdowns, startups, and standby units to meet operational and emergency needs.
  • Report emergencies to the Lead Engineer and Security as appropriate.
  • Identify safety hazards and take actions to protect personnel and visitors.
  • Perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs; notify Lead Engineer for outside contractor needs.
  • Maintain reliable attendance to perform job duties effectively.

Basic Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience with mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, pumps, and air handlers.
  • Advanced knowledge in operating and repairing facility systems, including HVAC, water, and plumbing systems.
  • Intermediate knowledge of emergency procedures related to facility system malfunctions or safety shutdowns.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and push 60 lbs.

Additional Requirements:

  • First-class limited Engineers license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with relevant education, training, and experience.
