Job summary

City of Suffolk is seeking a Building Inspector I to enforce state and local building codes across residential and commercial projects. Under general supervision, you will interpret plans, review documentation, and coordinate inspections with other staff.

You must have a high school diploma and at least three years in the trade; Virginia certification within 18 months, full certification within three years.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 3 years of trade experience.
• Virginia Tradesman License preferred.
• Ability to obtain necessary certifications within specified timelines.

Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings to enforce codes and regulations.
• Read construction plans and specifications for compliance.
• Coordinate inspection schedules with other inspectors and plan routes.
• Maintain and file inspection reports and logs.
• Interact tactfully with contractors, owners, and the public.
• Maintain and pursue required certifications and training.
