Job summary

Suffolk is seeking a Building Inspector I to enforce state and local building codes across building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. The role requires interpreting plans, coordinating inspections, and maintaining certifications with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

You will interact with property owners, developers and contractors and must be able to work under general supervision.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and 3 years of experience in trade.
• Virginia Tradesman License preferred or equivalent combination granting required skills.

Responsibilities

• Operates City equipment including vehicles, trucks, phones, and computers.
• Confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others regarding inspection requests and codes.
• Enters inspection data into hand-held terminal; prepares required reports.
• Plans daily inspection route; coordinates inspection schedule with other inspectors.
• Reads and refers to code manuals; maintains on-call status for emergencies.
• Investigates complaints of hazardous conditions and requests corrections as needed.
• Maintains and files forms, records and reports on inspections.
• Attends training to gain knowledge of code issues and obtains certifications.
• Interprets and reviews construction plans and specifications for code compliance.
• Confers with other inspectors on departmental policies and problems.
• Answers inquiries about inspections and permits; refers callers appropriately.
• Maintains and updates certifications with the Virginia training office.
• May conduct inspections of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations to ensure code compliance.
• May review construction plans for new installations, alterations and repairs to enforce code standards.
• Performs other related duties as required.
