Job summary

BKF Engineers is seeking a Project Engineer for the Bridges & Structures team to support delivery of bridge and transportation projects across California. You will contribute to coordinated structural solutions that meet agency requirements, project constraints, and constructability from design through construction.

The role requires at least 3 years in bridge/structural engineering, a ABET-accredited BS in Civil Engineering, and proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of bridge and structural engineering experience including design and analysis of highway structures
• ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and related design software
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly preferred; PE licensure prioritized
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
• Ability to collaborate with internal teams and external partners such as public agencies and contractors

Responsibilities

• Design and coordination of bridge and structural projects including highways and rail structures
• Prepare structural design plans, calculations, and specifications per Caltrans, AASHTO, and seismic standards
• Develop structural analysis, load ratings, and retrofit plans for new and existing bridges
• Design foundations and substructures (piles, drilled shafts, footings, abutments, piers) with seismic considerations
• Prepare quantity takeoffs, estimates, and construction cost evaluations
• Coordinate with roadways, geotech, drainage, utilities, and construction teams for integrated designs
• Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and alternatives analyses
• Apply applicable codes and permitting requirements for bridge design
• Review shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals for conformance
• Collaborate with agencies, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders throughout project life cycle
