Job summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled construction worker to repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in accordance with safety standards, VDOT specifications, and equipment operation standards.

You will perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing; remove/install structural components; participate in emergency operations; and operate light to medium-duty highway equipment. A valid CDL is required within 11 months of employment.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.

Responsibilities

• Perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing as part of structural maintenance.
• Prepare and install or replace bridges and structures according to standards.
• Place temporary bridges and manage emergency operations for snow/ice removal and incidents.
• Operate light/medium-duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Monitor and enforce safety, wear PPE, and follow OSHA/VOSHA rules.
• Transport personnel, equipment and materials between sites and perform pre-trip inspections.
