Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker to perform general maintenance tasks and operate heavy equipment, including backhoe, mini excavator, and lowboy tractor-trailer, to repair bridge deficiencies.

You will also handle skilled manual labor with medium equipment like skid steers and tandem dump trucks for bridge construction, repair and preservation, and place traffic control devices following the SCDOT manuals.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or approved equivalence.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required; CDL within 6 months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Perform general highway maintenance and operate heavy equipment (backhoe, mini excavator, lowboy tractor/trailer) to repair bridge deficiencies.
• Carry out skilled manual labor and operate medium equipment (skid steer, tandem dump truck) for bridge construction, repair and preservation.
• Perform bridge maintenance using tools such as saws, hoists, power tools, measuring devices and welders.
• Place traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones per SCDOT manuals.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations; may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
