North Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking an NBIS Bridge Inspection Intern for locations in Grand Forks or Bismarck. The role offers hands-on experience with bridge inspections, data collection, and field software while traveling across the eastern half of North Dakota.

Requires enrollment in engineering technology or civil engineering and a valid ND driver license. The internship is paid, full-time during summer 2027, with exposure to safety practices, inspections, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an engineering technology, civil/construction engineering or similar undergraduate degree program.
• Requires ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• possession of a valid Class D Driver License for travel within the state of North Dakota.

Responsibilities

• Assist certified bridge inspectors during routine and special inspections.
• Travel to structures across the state and help document existing conditions.
• Use inspection equipment and mobile inspection software to collect and record field data.
• Observe and learn inspection techniques, deterioration mechanisms, and safety practices.
• Support photo documentation, measurements, and basic field notes.
• Follow all construction-site safety requirements, including rules that exceed standard inspection safety protocols.
• Help maintain inspection tools, tablets, and field equipment.
• Participate in team discussions on inspection findings and structural condition ratings.
