Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a skilled crew leader to manage bridge construction, maintenance, and related structural tasks. You will oversee fabrication of steel and concrete components, perform precise measurements and layouts, and ensure safety compliance on site.

Leadership duties include training staff and guiding crews, with responsibilities that cover planning, record-keeping, and on-site problem solving.

Qualifications

• Ability to lead, direct, and train others.
• CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Mathematical calculations for layout on bridges and culverts.
• Read and interpret bridge plans, shop drawings and sketches.
• Knowledge of safety policies and work zone procedures.

Responsibilities

• Lead bridge construction and maintenance work across steel, concrete, and timber elements.
• Perform measurements, layouts, and quantity determinations on bridges and culverts.
• Provide on-the-job training and supervise crew in emergencies.
• Ensure proper safety protocols and use of PPE on site.
• Coordinate traffic control and detour planning per MUTCD guidance.
