Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Public Health is seeking a Breastfeeding Support Specialist to promote breastfeeding among pregnant women and new mothers enrolled in the WIC Program in Rock Hill. Under supervision, you will conduct postpartum and prenatal outreach, make home or clinic visits, provide breastfeeding guidance, and refer complex cases to coordinators.

This position emphasizes confidentiality and collaboration with healthcare teams.

Qualifications

• State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant human services or social services experience.
• Equivalent combinations of education/experience may be considered with approval.
• Official transcripts or diplomas must be provided if requested by the agency.

Responsibilities

• Contact WIC breastfeeding moms in hospital/clinic, home visits, or by telephone within 24-72 hours, etc. after delivery to provide breastfeeding support.
• Refer breastfeeding moms/infants with complex breastfeeding situations to the breastfeeding coordinator or designated breastfeeding expert.
• Make prenatal contacts by telephone at 16, 20, 24, 27, 31, 35, 39, and 40 weeks gestation.
• Invite WIC mothers to breastfeeding classes and support groups; teach breastfeeding information and options.
• Keep accurate records of all contacts with WIC mothers and maintain confidentiality; attend meetings and assist trainings.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisors and/or Breastfeeding Coordinator.
