Job summary

AccessHealth's Katy WIC program seeks a breastfeeding peer counselor to provide information, encouragement and practical support to pregnant and lactating women to promote successful breastfeeding. You will educate, address concerns, and help families navigate breastfeeding challenges, maintain records, and coordinate with Lactation Consultants.

Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred; adaptable hours with some weekend coverage.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Present or past WIC recipient.
• Have successfully breastfed or expressed breast milk for at least one baby.
• Ability to work outside regular clinic hours and outside of the WIC clinic.
• Communicate with peers effectively.
• Organize thoughts and present accurate information.
• Document and keep accurate records.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm for breastfeeding and share it.

Responsibilities

• Provide breastfeeding information and promote breastfeeding to pregnant women.
• Address infant feeding concerns of pregnant mothers.
• Correct misinformation which may deter breastfeeding.
• Teach classes on advantages of breastfeeding.
• Prepare breast pump materials and bulletin boards.
• Counsel and support lactating mothers and manage problems.
• Refer complex cases to Lactation Consultant.
• Keep accurate records of counseling sessions.
• Support lactating mothers returning to work/school.
