Job summary

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, Inc. seeks a Peer Counselor Coordinator to provide advanced lactation care and direct support to breastfeeding families within the WIC Breastfeeding Program.

You will serve as the Designated Breastfeeding Expert, manage complex referrals, expand Baby Café sessions, and train staff to ensure compassionate, evidence-based care across Brooklyn and Queens.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Provisional New York State Peer Certification.
• IBCLC or CLC credential preferred.
• 1 year experience counseling breastfeeding dyads.
• Willingness to travel across five boroughs.
• Bilingual preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on breastfeeding support, assessment, and education to pregnant and breastfeeding families, including complex lactation cases.
• Creates a welcoming, inclusive environment for all participants.
• Identify lactation issues and refer to higher-level care when needed.
• Accept and manage referrals for complex breastfeeding situations beyond the Peer Counselor scope.
• Facilitate community breastfeeding programs, including Baby Café sessions, guiding group discussions and providing lactation support.
• Prepare Baby Café sessions by setting up spaces and materials, maintaining a clean environment.
• Observe feedings and provide hands-on assistance with participant consent.
• Assess need for lactation aids as per WIC policy.
• Provide timely follow-up and continuity of care for referrals.
• Maintain documentation of all breastfeeding contacts, assessments, and referrals in the MIS.
