Position Details

Title: Brand & Communication Strategist
Company: Tampa Electric Company

Position Concept

Reporting to the Manager of Brand and Strategic Communications, the Brand and Strategic Communication (BSC) Strategist is responsible for building communication strategies and incorporating them into the organization’s broader integrated marketing communications plan. These communications focus on marketing, customer, and stakeholder communications. The Strategist also supports the implementation of targeted communication strategies within the plan to ensure Tampa Electric’s business strategy, goals, and initiatives are accomplished.

This role is part of a team of strategic communication professionals with a focus on strategy, marketing, media analysis, corporate communication, crisis communication, and issues management. These plans are integrated into employee, customer, and stakeholder communication and marketing solutions. The Strategist partners with leaders throughout Tampa Electric to create and execute robust marketing and communication plans and provides insight on communication and marketing trends. The Strategist also provides expert analysis on the effectiveness of these communications.

Level 1: Brand & Communication Strategist
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing and implementing marketing, customer, and stakeholder communications within the Integrated Marketing and Communication Plan for Tampa Electric, collaborating with teams such as Government and Community Relations, Clean Energy and Emerging Technologies, and Digital Customer Experience.
  • Develop strategies for proactive and reactive media, issues management, and corporate social media channels, ensuring alignment with Tampa Electric’s brand and positioning strategies.
  • Coordinate with team members to develop channel strategies, ensuring KPIs such as marketing goals, communication recall, and positive sentiment are met or exceeded.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, providing advice on communication solutions and estimating costs and benefits.
  • Develop speeches and presentations for executives, ensuring appropriate tone, key messages, grammatical accuracy, and alignment with company branding.
  • Maintain strong relationships with various teams, sharing expertise and working collaboratively to provide optimal solutions.
Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or related field.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree in strategic public relations, marketing, communications, or journalism.

Related Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in a communications role, with a proven record in strategic communication planning, media relations, digital marketing, brand strategy, and employee communications. Experience in crisis communications is a plus.
  • Must be an innovative thinker, results-oriented, and capable of forming effective relationships across various levels. Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills are essential, along with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Working Conditions

Availability for on-call and after-hours work for project and issues management.

Level 2: Senior Brand & Communication Strategist
Additional Duties
  • Serve as a company spokesperson during critical events or crises, providing media relations support and advice to leadership. May need to travel on short notice.
  • Lead strategic communications for complex issues, drafting comprehensive plans, position papers, and FAQs in coordination with experts.
  • Develop and implement public relations strategies to support Tampa Electric’s brand and business initiatives, establishing executives as thought leaders, and creating media opportunities across Florida and the electric industry.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the local media landscape and influencers, proactively addressing potential challenges and opportunities.
  • May act as a backup spokesperson as needed.
Additional Qualifications

Licenses/Certifications

  • Preferred: Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP), or equivalent. Over 15 years of experience in strategic communication can substitute for certification.

Related Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years in strategic communication roles.
