Job summary

DC Public Library seeks a Supervisory Librarian to lead a branch with customer‑centric service and strong community engagement. The role guides operations, staff development, and daily activities while aligning with system‑wide priorities.

The position requires a MLIS or related advanced degree and at least five years of library leadership experience in an urban setting; duties include partnerships, program development, and policy interpretation.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Library Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution or closely related field such as Public Administration, Business Administration, Education, Public Policy, Management or Organizational Leadership, Community Development or Social Work.
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive library management or public-service leadership experience.
• Experience leading services for diverse urban populations and partnering with community organizations.
• Supervising, training, developing and evaluating staff of diverse abilities.
• Experience designing and implementing improvements to processes, services, programs and initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead the operation of the branch and design services aligned with the library’s strategic plan.
• Supervise staff, develop performance plans and conduct evaluations.
• Manage facilities, equipment and supplies, and coordinate with other departments.
• Foster partnerships with community organizations and schools.
• Represent the library at community events and manage staff development.
• Oversee staff orientation and training for librarians and assistants.
