Job summary

U.S. Border Patrol, part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) at GL-5/GL-7 levels.

This full-time federal law enforcement career offers paid training, extensive benefits, and potential relocation to prioritized duty locations across the Southwest and beyond. Newly appointed agents may receive a recruitment incentive up to $20,000 after academy completion and an additional retention incentive up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years.

Qualifications

• One year of general work experience demonstrating ability to take charge, make sound decisions, and maintain composure in stressful situations.
• Bachelor's degree or successful completion of a full four-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Combination of general work experience and college education, calculated using your resume and transcripts submitted with your application.
• Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
• Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
• Age Restriction: Must be referred for selection before the 40th birthday; Veterans’ Preference eligibility may apply.
• Formal Training: After hire, training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM; Spanish language proficiency required.

Responsibilities

• Detect and question people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents to determine citizenship or violations.
• Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers near borders; maintain surveillance including night operations.
• Interpret and follow tracks, marks, and evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
• Perform farm, building, traffic, city, and transportation checks and patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways.
• Patrol using vehicles, horses, vessels, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles to fulfill the USBP mission.
