Job summary

City of Kenosha seeks a Bookmobile Outreach Driver to serve the public at diverse city and county sites. You will drive the Bookmobile and other library vehicles, provide circulation and reference services, and assist with outreach programs across multiple locations.

Job description

Under the general supervision of the Head of Outreach, Programs & Education, provide library service to the public at a variety of community locations throughout the city and county. Drive the Kenosha Public Library Bookmobile and other library vehicles to provide outreach services to the community, and perform clerical and mechanical tasks.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide direct circulation, readers advisory, and basic reference services to library patrons at various outreach sites including the Bookmobile, pop up libraries, and community events.
  • Provide information about library services, programs and resources at various outreach locations, especially information about library services for people with disabilities.
  • Provide pleasant, professional customer service at Bookmobile stops and outreach events.
  • Drive the Bookmobile safely and promptly to scheduled daily stops and special events.
  • Check items in and out.
  • Create library accounts for new patrons.
  • Stock the Bookmobile at the beginning of each shift, shelve returned items at stops, and maintain shelving order alphabetically or by the Dewey Decimal Number.
  • Provides reader's advisory service including creating and maintaining book displays on vehicles.
  • Use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sheets, and other library computer systems.
  • File vehicle inspection reports.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and orderly, both inside and out.
  • Perform routine general maintenance.
  • Take responsibility for the safety of vehicle, staff, and public during emergency situations, including threatening weather and vehicle trouble.
  • Fuel vehicle at the City of Kenosha central services garage as scheduled.
  • Advise Head of Outreach, Programs & Education of unsafe conditions of any kind.
  • Fill in to provide additional Outreach Services, such as home delivery visits, lobby stops, and other emergent solutions to reach audiences in the community as needed.
General Job Functions
  • Interact with patrons in person or by phone with respect, courtesy, and confidence.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and other activities.
  • Stay knowledgeable about library policies, procedures, events, and news.
  • Properly handle confidential patron information.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) without Air Brake restriction (commonly referred to as having an Air Brake Certification).
  • At least five years of driving experience, preferably two years of CDL driving experience.
  • One year of experience in a customer service or retail environment.
  • Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to maintain a regular and flexible work schedule.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with public, peers, and supervisors.
  • A strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion: an understanding that the Public Library is for absolutely everyone.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patrons and staff, with a basic command of the English language.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Spanish language skills are preferred.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Talking and hearing.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing (including stairs) and stooping, bending, twisting and reaching (up, across, and down). Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Keyboarding, writing, filing, sorting, shelving, processing, and picking up and shelving books.
  • Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or less.
  • Pushing and pulling: objects weighing up to 60-80lbs pounds on wheels.
  • Able to travel to meetings outside the library.
  • Able to work in enclosed space and remote locations for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work at all library branches and other service locations, as needed.
  • Able to work in environmental conditions which may include exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold, noise, fumes, odors, vibrations, wetness and humidity, and temperature changes.
  • Able to use the following: audiovisual equipment, building security systems, calculator, computer workstation, copy machine, scan station, telephone, and other readily available technology.
