Job description

Boiler Water Operator

This position is responsible for the safe, efficient operation and routine maintenance of boiler and water treatment systems to ensure reliable steam and hot water production. The Boiler Water Operator monitors system performance, performs inspections and testing, adjusts chemical treatment levels, and responds to operational issues to maintain compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

The Boiler Water Operator works closely with maintenance personnel, facility operators, contractors, and management to support uninterrupted operations while promoting a safe and efficient working environment. This role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to operational excellence and safety.

The Boiler Water Operator reports directly to the Operations Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Operate, monitor, and control boilers, feedwater systems, condensate systems, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections of boiler systems, piping, valves, pumps, gauges, controls, and associated equipment.
  • Monitor water chemistry and conduct boiler water testing; adjust chemical treatment levels as required.
  • Record and maintain operating data, including pressures, temperatures, flow rates, chemical readings, and system performance metrics.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and respond to operational issues, alarms, abnormal conditions, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Perform startup, shutdown, and emergency operating procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Conduct routine maintenance activities and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel or contracted service providers.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection records, maintenance documentation, and regulatory reports.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, EPA requirements, state boiler regulations, and company safety standards.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, inspections, and emergency response activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe boiler room and mechanical equipment environment.
  • Communicate operational concerns, equipment issues, and maintenance needs to supervisors and team members.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts to enhance system reliability, efficiency, and safety.
  • Any other duties, as necessary, to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the organization.
Required Skills and Knowledge
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of boiler operator training, vocational education, or technical coursework preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience operating commercial, institutional, or industrial boiler systems preferred.
  • Experience with water treatment testing, chemical handling, and water chemistry control strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of boiler operations, steam systems, condensate systems, and water treatment principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of OSHA safety requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry practices, and hazard recognition.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify abnormal operating conditions.
  • Effective troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills for logging operational data, completing reports, and maintaining records.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record preferred.
Physical Requirements – Work Environment
  • Work is performed primarily in boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, industrial facilities, and operational environments.
  • May require shift work, on‑call coverage, nights, weekends, holidays, or emergency response assignments.
  • Exposure to heat, steam, chemicals, noise, moving mechanical equipment, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely in hot, noisy, industrial, or utility‑related environments.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate controls, tools, testing equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Required to have close visual acuity to monitor equipment, read gauges, perform testing, and complete documentation.

Work schedules may vary and can include standard business hours, shift assignments, on‑call responsibilities, or emergency response activities as required. Remote administrative work may be permitted when appropriate and with prior supervisor approval.
