Job summary

McLaren Health Care is seeking a full-time Boiler Operator to ensure safe, efficient operation of hospital boiler and energy systems. You will manage gas-fired boilers, steam generation, and related auxiliary equipment, performing routine testing, maintenance, and documentation in a health care environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates boilers, main chilled water plant and auxiliary equipment in compliance with state law.
  • Inspects gauges and meters; performs cleaning and minor repairs.
  • Fires boilers; regulates steam production and water use; reads gauges/meters.
  • Lubricates equipment; replaces minor parts as needed with accuracy.
  • Inspects boiler in operation and reports issues beyond own scope.
  • Tests boiler water, fans, and reheats water; manages chemical additions.
  • Maintains computerized energy management system.
  • Complies with boiler operation regulations; completes work orders and documentation.
  • Performs general maintenance and repairs as required.

Job description

Under general supervision, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the physical plant for the distribution of necessary utilities. Engages and maintains one or more gas fired boilers, steam generators and associated auxiliary equipment. Maintains essential support systems throughout the building at all times with the assistance of a computer-integrated system. May also perform general maintenance and repair tasks.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Operates boilers, main chilled water plant and other auxiliary equipment in compliance with state law. Inspects gauges and meters for safety and informational purposes. Cleans and performs minor repairs to equipment.
  • Performs firing operation of the boilers and other assigned duties. Builds up steam pressure depending upon the demands placed on the equipment by the various departments. a. Regulates steam production by adjusting controls. Reads and interpretes gauges and panels to determine efficiency of boilers. b. Reads meters such as fuel, steam, etc., and regulates water use and fans by hand levers and controls.
  • Lubricates boiler, compressors, pump, and other parts on a regular basis to maintain smooth operation. a. Cleans inside of boiler walls by scraping off scales. b. Replaces minor parts (worn or broken), such as valves, meters, levers, etc., with 100% accuracy.
  • Inspects boiler in operation to determine smoothness of operation. Regulates by levers and valves any unusual conditions and the amount of steam required.
  • Reports faulty operation to supervisor if damage or problem is not within limits of own standard methods or knowledge.
  • Tests boiler water, fans and reheats water, and adds chemicals to maintain a proper control. During cooling season, tests and adds chemicals to tower and chilled water, with 100% accuracy.
  • Maintains and operates a computerized energy management system.
  • Adheres to current rules and regulations related to boiler operations so that systems pass inspection the first time.
  • Completes work orders, record material utilized on jobs and other required documentation.
  • May also perform general maintenance and repair tasks as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required and directed.

Required:
