Description of Work

This is a position at Piedmont Correctional Institution located in Salisbury, N.C. (Rowan County), which is a Medium male prison facility housing 800 inmates. Work in this class involves the operation of steam boilers for heating purposes. Employees serve as shift boiler operators in steam plants that vary in size and complexity.

KEY DUTIES
  • Operate and supervise the operation of steam boilers and related equipment used for facility heating and utility services.
  • Serve as the shift leader or lead operator in a medium- to large-sized steam plant.
  • Start up, shut down, and monitor boilers to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Record and monitor pressure, temperature, water level, fuel consumption, and other operational readings.
  • Adjust controls and equipment settings to maintain optimum boiler performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct water testing and chemical treatment procedures to maintain proper boiler water quality.
  • Perform routine inspections of boilers, pumps, valves, piping systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Troubleshoot operational problems and take corrective action to prevent equipment failure.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on boilers and associated equipment.
  • Assist maintenance staff with major repairs, overhauls, and equipment replacements.
  • Assign, direct, train, and oversee the work of lower-level boiler operators and plant personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental requirements, and operating procedures.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, maintenance records, and operational documentation.
  • Respond to emergencies involving boiler systems and utility equipment.
  • Coordinate with facility maintenance, HVAC, and engineering personnel to support institution operations
  • Provide lead-worker guidance to Boiler Operators and support staff.
  • Train employees on boiler operations, safety procedures, and maintenance practices.
  • Monitor employee performance and ensure work is completed according to established standards.
  • Assist management with scheduling and shift coverage.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: Management Preferences: Documented knowledge of the operation of boilers arid related equipment. Documented knowledge of the maintenance requirements of boilers and related equipment.

Salary Range: $35,596-$62,294

Salary Grade: NC06

Minimum Education and Experience
