Job description

Civil Service Title- Civil Engineer 3

Job Responsibilities

This position will report to the Bridge Inspections unit and will serve as a team leader and quality control engineer in the Bridge Inspection & Management unit of the Bureau of Maintenance, Inspection, and Operations.

• Perform in-depth, routine, special, and emergency inspections using a variety of equipment and tools.
• Inspect elevated structures over roadways, railroads, and water, as well as tunnels, in confined spaces using equipment such as bucket trucks, man-lifts, ladders, and snoopers in all weather conditions.
• Prepare bridge condition sketches and produce bridge inspection reports per New York State bridge inspection standards.
• Identify and prioritize potential hazards and prepare structural and safety flags with all necessary plans, drawings, and technical specifications.
• Drive an inspection van for fieldwork.
• Assist the Director of Bridge Inspection in office-related tasks.
• Work evenings, nights, and weekends as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
• Valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License with current registration maintained for the duration of employment.

A master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required civil engineering experience.

Special Note

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, applicants must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.

Preferred Skills

• Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends.
• Strong background in AutoCAD and MS Office suite.
• Ability to drive city-owned vehicle; possession of a valid NYS Motor Vehicle Driver’s License with no restrictions for field work.
• Preference for candidates with a NYS PE License and a Civil Engineering Degree.
