The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges, seeks a Civil Engineer 3 to manage design reviews, seismic analyses, and field inspections for major bridge projects. The role focuses on safety, compliance with AASHTO and NYSDOT standards, and coordination with Resident Engineer and contractors.
Applicants must hold a NYS Professional Engineer license and have extensive civil engineering experience; a master’s degree can substitute for part of the experience.
Civil Service Title- Civil Engineer 3. NOTE: DEC 2, 2026 BEGINS THE ANTICIPATED FILING PERIOD FOR CIVIL ENGINEER PROMOTION EXAM NO. 7515, AND CIVIL ENGINEER OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAM NO. 7020. THOSE NOT SERVING PERMANENTLY ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO FILE – PROOF OF FILING WILL BE REQUIRED. The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City. Serves as a Civil Engineer level 3 in the Engineering Review Section of the Division of Bridges. Reviews technically complex city-let bridge and retaining wall projects including design calculations and design drawings at various phases of design and construction to ensure compliance with City, State and Federal standards. Reviews and performs seismic analysis and seismic calculations for bridges and retaining walls. Performs complex analysis of bridge load rating calculations in accordance with load rating policies, procedures and Federal and State load rating directives. Performs structural analysis for city owned bridges to ensure their safety against heavy weight trucks and cranes. Performs field inspections of bridges and retaining walls to assess conditions. Reviews construction projects for Bridges and retaining walls, including RFI (Request for information) by contractors, conduct field visits to construction sites and attend construction meetings with Resident Engineer, contractors, and consultants. Supervises subordinates in technical and administrative matters. Performs other related duties. Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, NYSDOT Bridge Manual, and NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Manual is preferred. Knowledge of computer software is preferred. Preferred Skills: Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. NYS drivers license. Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and writing. Possess a NYS Professional Engineering License. Work Location: 55 Water St. New York, NY 10041. Hours: 8:00AM - 4:00PM M-F.
