Job summary

The New York City Department of Transportation is seeking a Civil Engineer 3 to lead quality control for bridge inspections. This role involves performing inspections of over 800 bridges and managing safety and mobility in New York City.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil engineering and be proficient in AutoCAD, with a valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. The position offers 35 hours per week at a work location in Queens.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Overview

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges manages the full life cycle of over 800 bridges, tunnels, and 600 retaining walls, ensuring the safety and mobility of the public. This position reports to the Bridge Inspections unit and involves leading quality control for bridge inspection and management.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a team leader and quality control engineer in the Bridge Inspection & Management unit.
• Perform in-depth, routine, special, and emergency inspections of elevated structures and tunnels using equipment such as bucket trucks, man‑lifts, ladders, and snoopers in all weather conditions.
• Prepare bridge condition sketches and produce inspection reports per New York State bridge inspection standards.
• Identify and prioritize potential hazards, and prepare structural and safety flags with necessary plans, drawings, and technical specifications.
• Drive an inspection van for fieldwork and assist the Director of Bridge Inspection with office tasks.
• Work evenings, nights, and weekends as required and perform other related duties.

Preferred Skills

• Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends.
• Strong background in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office suite.
• Ability to drive city‑owned vehicle and hold a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License without restrictions.
• Preference given to holders of a NYS PE License and a Civil Engineering degree.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Four (4) years of full‑time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
2. A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License, current registration maintained during employment.
3. Masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may substitute one year of experience.

In addition, for Assignment Levels II and III eligibility, candidates must have at least one year as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project within the last three years.
