CIVIL SERVICE TITLE: CIVIL ENGINEER 2

JOB DESCRIPTION

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City. Under the direction of the Engineer in Charge (EIC), this position serves as a Civil Engineer Level II in the Monitoring and Survey Unit of the Bureau of Engineering Review and Support. The successful candidate will perform field surveys and visual inspections of bridges and retaining walls. Monitors cracks and movements in bridge structures as well as foundation settlement. Surveys bridge girder alignments and twisted movements in steel girders and floor beams due to accidents. Verifies field elevations to find existing vertical clearances of bridge structures. Operates survey equipment and office software for efficient monitoring of bridges and retaining walls. The candidate will collect field data and create a project database for each project. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary. The candidate must have driver's license valid in New York State. The candidate must possess a valid Professional Engineer (P.E) license in the State of New York.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form. Candidate must possess recent experience in operating survey equipment and have advanced knowledge of AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Windows.

Minimum Qualifications
  • (1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; and
  • (2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

A masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience required in “1
