Job Summary
The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges manages the full life cycle of over 800 bridges, tunnels, and more than 600 retaining walls, ensuring public safety and mobility for all users. Team members work on major project designs, oversee construction and maintenance activities, conduct engineering reviews, and perform quality assurance on some of the city’s most iconic and complex projects.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field visits to identify deficient structural conditions, perform structural analysis, prepare design plans, and determine scope of work.
- Create detailed sketches and repair protocols, maintain an up‑to‑date record of outstanding repair requests, and ensure timely repairs according to the urgency of the flag condition.
- Routinely communicate with relevant DOT units and contractors to follow up on the status of repair requests and complete repairs in accordance with NYS DOT Bridge Inspection Manual guidelines, NYSDOT OSS Inventory and Inspection manual, and other applicable codes and standards.
- Supervise and manage the coordination of repair request work with external units, agency divisions, and governmental entities, confirming compliance with NYS Construction Specifications, Steel Construction Manual, and other relevant standards.
- Review preliminary (capital) design drawings to ensure future maintainability.
- Undertake independent or group field visits in a city vehicle to NYSDOT and NYCDOT‑owned bridges, sign structures, elevated structures, and over‑water structures.
- Prepare responses to correspondence, make court appearances, provide affidavits, and testify on behalf of the City.
- Sign and seal engineering and other official documents.
- Plan, guide, and review the work of subordinate engineers and other staff.
- Work evenings, nights, and weekends as required, and perform other related duties as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of full‑time satisfactory experience in supervising employees performing project management work on engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape‑architectural projects, or supervising a construction project with a value of $1 000 000 or more, either of the following:
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration, combined with one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in project management work.
- A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of experience as described in the first criterion above.
- A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus any combination of college or university education and/or experience described above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience, with experience credits as follows:
- One year of experience credit for each 30 semester credits of college or university education leading to a bachelor’s degree in the listed disciplines.
- One year of experience credit for a Master’s degree in one of the listed disciplines.
- One year of experience credit for a Juris Doctor degree.
- One year of experience credit for a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, or Registered Landscape Architect.
In addition to the above, candidates must have at least one additional year of experience as described above in a supervisory capacity or have served for at least one year as a project manager for a large and/or complex construction project. For Assignment Level II, candidates must have at least two additional years of experience in a supervisory capacity or have served for at least two additional years as a project manager for a large and/or complex construction project.
Preferred Skills
- Four years of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college may be substituted for one year of experience.
- Strong background in AutoCAD, Acrobat, and the MS Office suite.
- Ability to drive a city‑owned vehicle and possession of a valid New York State motor vehicle driver’s license without restrictions.
- Organized and able to effectively and professionally communicate.
- Able to compose formal letters and emails.
