Job summary

MedStar Health in Baltimore seeks a Medical Laboratory Technologist for the Blood Bank to perform routine and specialized procedures and report results used in patient care.

Key duties include equipment operation, quality control, data reporting, specimen handling, training, and active participation in quality improvement teams. Work hours are 2:30pm–11pm with at least one weekend per month and occasional Fridays/Mondays for coverage.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field required.
• Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology may be considered with 2 years of blood bank experience.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to department goals and adheres to policies, procedures, quality and safety standards, and accreditation requirements.
• Maintains inventory and keeps the work area neat and orderly.
• Operates and maintains laboratory equipment; troubleshoots; documents information per protocol.
• Participates in quality control, evaluates results, implements corrective actions, and ensures accuracy of test results.
• Performs routine and special procedures per protocol; reports results; consults with pathologist on difficult findings.
• Prepares and evaluates statistical data, cost analysis, and daily tallies for monthly reports.
• Prepares, evaluates, and labels reagents and media per procedure.
• Processes specimens with correct identification, confidentiality, preparation, storage, and transport; may procure specimens.
• Sets up and evaluates new procedures; conducts comparison studies for linearity, precision, and accuracy; determines normal ranges.
• Trains new employees and students; instructs on new procedures and documents performance.
• Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
