Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in the Baltimore-Washington region seeks a Biophotonics Systems Engineer to contribute to biomedical and remote sensing system development from concept through deployment. You will join a multidisciplinary team dedicated to innovation, rigorous engineering, and practical impact.

The role emphasizes hands-on design, algorithm and hardware development, and clear technical communication. Candidates should have a Ph.D.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in optical engineering, optical science, electrical engineering, imaging science or related field.
  • At least 4 years of demonstrated proficiency with optical or electronic hardware in a professional or academic setting.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and technical writing skills.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Secret clearance and ultimately TS/SCI clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to development of biomedical and remote sensing systems from concept through full life‑cycle development, testing and deployment; ensure quality and timeliness of technical products.
  • Develop advanced algorithms and hardware for biomedical and remote sensing applications.
  • Assist in brainstorming and developing new biophotonics concepts through R&D efforts.
  • Document contributions and present findings in internal and external forums.
