Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in the Baltimore-Washington metro area seeks a Senior Electro‑Optical Systems Engineer to join the Imaging Systems Group in Laurel, MD. You will lead design, analysis, and optimization of complex optical subsystems for high‑performance imaging and sensing, balancing performance, SWaP, and cost.

You will support integration and verification of prototype electro‑optic systems, develop test plans and metrics, and drive maturation of designs.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in optical engineering, optical science, electrical engineering, imaging science, or related degree.
  • At least 6 years of proficiency with optical design, integration, and testing; knowledge of metamaterials, PICs, or coherent optics is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal, speaking, and technical writing skills.
  • Eligibility for Interim Secret clearance by start date and eventual TS/SCI clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, analysis, and optimization of optical and electro-optic subsystems, balancing performance, SWaP, and cost.
  • Support integration and verification of prototype systems; develop test strategies and metrics; oversee lab characterization.
  • Develop IR&D concepts, perform technology trade studies, and shape future research directions.
  • Support field integration and testing activities of developed systems.
