Job description

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, seeks applications for a full-time laboratory technician to support the research of Dr. Katja Kasimatis. The Kasimatis Lab studies the evolutionary genomics of sexual conflict using the Caenorhabditis nematode model system (www.conflictgenomics.com). The technician will work directly with Dr. Kasimatis to support research in the lab located in the Physical Life Sciences Building. They will assist with maintaining the lab nematode strains, generating preliminary data, and supporting the lab’s research projects. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Prepare media and reagents.
  • Maintain nematodes strains.
  • Culture bacteria from natural nematode strains.
  • Bacterial sequencing.
  • Identify and score bacterial infections in the nematode reproductive tract.
  • Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
  • Supporting lab members with collection of data.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
  • Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.
  • At direction of Principal Investigator or senior staff, perform biological, hematological, chemical, or physical analysis.
  • Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports. Assist with literature reviews.
  • Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
  • Keep informed of new lab techniques.
  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • May provide logistical support to the study.

The preferred candidate will have experience in animal husbandry and/or molecular biology.

Qualified candidates must have:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.Bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure: None Required.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience with spreadsheets, ordering, budget management.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively incorporate feedback.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience in bacterial culturing and molecular biology.

Physical Demands:

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring fine finger manipulation.

This onsite position is located in Charlottesville, VA.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated Hiring Range: $18.00 to $19.50 per hour commensurate with education and experience. This is a NON-EXEMPT level, benefited position.

Position Compensation Range: $13.92 - $27.85 Hourly
