Job summary

AbbVie in the San Francisco Bay Area (South San Francisco) is seeking an senior scientist for Biologics CMC Purification Development. You will design and optimize drug substance purification processes for complex biologics and lead technology transfers to GMP manufacturing sites.

You will also develop viral clearance strategies, oversee contract-lab studies, and mentor junior scientists while collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet project timelines in a fast-paced lab environment.

Qualifications

• Experience with downstream bioprocess unit operations including chromatography, virus filtration and tangential-flow filtration.
• Strong understanding of protein biochemistry, separation science and bioprocess engineering; ability to apply literature to experiments.
• Ability to independently design, execute, reference literature, and interpret lab results to answer scientific questions.
• Mentoring and guiding junior scientists in a fast-paced lab environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop, optimize, characterize, and scale purification processes for monoclonal antibodies and complex biologics.
• Lead technology transfer to GMP sites; prepare transfer packages and support facility readiness.
• Develop viral clearance strategies and oversee studies with contract labs; interpret data and approve reports.
• Refine purification platforms with mechanistic modeling, DoE, data analytics and wet-lab studies.
• Conceive and evaluate novel bioprocess technologies aligned with group strategy.
• Stay current with literature and regulatory guidance; translate advances into program plans.
• Prepare technical publications, reports, and regulatory filings; present at conferences.
• Collaborate across functions to meet project deliverables and timelines.
• Adhere to safety, GxP, and corporate standards; mentor junior scientists.
