Job summary

Axle in Bethesda, MD seeks a Data Scientist Fellow to transform autonomous lab data into actionable insights. You will build image analysis and bioinformatics pipelines for Cytation 9 imaging, merge environmental data, and deliver machine-readable outputs for the loop.

The role emphasizes developing new methods, publishing, and collaborating with biologists and data engineers in a hybrid setting. PhD required with strong Python and ML skills.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related quantitative field within last five years.
• Experience in microscopy image analysis and feature extraction.
• Strong Python skills with scientific/imaging libraries and ML framework.
• Solid statistics/experimental design and reproducible analysis practices.
• Experience with Git and Linux/HPC environments.
• Proven research output (publications/preprints/software).
• Ability to collaborate with automation engineers and biologists; NIH clearance possible.

Responsibilities

• Develop and run image analysis pipelines for Cytation 9 microscopy data.
• Define quantitative readouts and metrics for autonomous lab loop.
• Integrate environmental data with imaging results for drift detection.
• Apply ML/deep learning methods to multimodal data with validation.
• Publish methods/results and train staff on analysis tools.
• Ensure data management aligned with FAIR and NIH requirements.
