Job summary

New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a highly motivated Staff Attorney for the Pro Se Plus Project (PSPP) team. This full-time role supports asylum seekers through pro se representation, trainings, and court appearances in removal defense, with collaboration across PSPP and EOIR/ICE settings.

The attorney will handle asylum, withholding, SIJS, and related relief, require NY Bar admission, and demonstrate trauma-informed advocacy. Fluency in Spanish or French is required.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited school.
• Admission to the New York State bar is required.
• Fluency in a second language (Spanish or French) is required.
• Minimum 1 year of experience working with asylum seekers.
• Experience with trauma-informed advocacy and immigration law.

Responsibilities

• Observe immigration court hearings and provide intakes and counsel.
• Provide post-detention resources for detained individuals and families.
• Conduct legal screenings at community-based sites and courts.
• Prepare and file pro se asylum and EAD applications; file and respond to motions.
• Coordinate with PSPP partners and external stakeholders.
• Represent a small number of non-detained NYC residents in removal proceedings.
• Track client cases and funding-related progress; follow-up as needed.
• Participate in outreach events and trainings.
